Diet, Snacking, and Weight Loss: The "Aligner Diet" Phenomenon

Patients often report losing weight during treatment. Is it true? We explore how the "22-hour rule" changes your relationship with food.

We are dentists, not dieticians. But we hear it every day: "I've lost 5kg since starting aligners!"

It's not magic, and it's not a guarantee. It's simply a byproduct of the "hassle factor".

The "Is It Worth It?" Calculation

When you wear aligners, you have to take them out to eat anything. Then you have to brush your teeth before putting them back in.

Suddenly, that office cookie or casual bag of crisps requires a 10-minute hygiene ritual. Your brain does a quick calculation: "Is that biscuit worth flossing for?"

Usually, the answer is no. You stop mindless snacking. You stick to three main meals a day. You drink water instead of sugary sodas (because you can't drink soda with them in).

The Water Benefit

Since water is the only thing allowed with trays in, our patients become incredibly hydrated. Proper hydration improves skin, energy, and yes, can aid weight loss.

Dr Yasha Shirazi's Observation:

"The main benefit isn't weight loss; it's the reduction in sugar frequency. Every time you snack, your mouth becomes acidic for 30 minutes. By grouping food into meals, your enamel is under attack far less often. It's great for your teeth."

The Downside: The "Binge"

Be careful not to overcompensate. Some patients take their trays out for dinner and try to eat 2,000 calories in one sitting because they are hungry. Balance is key.

Also, don't rush your meals. You need to keep the trays out for roughly 30-40 mins per meal to digest properly. Don't inhale your food just to get the trays back in!
